   Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) is a premier resource centre engaged in research, documentation, publication and dissemination of knowledge in the field of arts and culture.  The centre under its ongoing programme Living Traditions of Ramkatha and Mahabharata is organizing a seven day International Conference on Ramlila and Ramkatha manchan under the theme Epic Processes: Mobility, Patronage and Aesthetics from 23rd November - 29th November 2015.

IGNCA invited papers that pertain to the following themes:

  • Ramlila: Text and its cultural resonances.

  • Ramlila: Text in performance and performance texts.

  • Ramlila: Community, identity and aesthetic experience.

  • Ramlila: Patronage networks and aesthetics.

  • Ramlila: Structures, frames and styles.

  • Ramlila: Form, diversity and intra and inter generic linkages.

  • Ramlila: Arts, crafts and communities involved.

  • Ramlila and socio-economic context

  • Ramlila: The carnival and the carnivalesque.

  • Ramlila and Independence Movement.

  • Ramlila: Contemporary stage and new media.

  • Ramlila: patronage systems, preservation and sustainability.

  • Ramlila: Global processes and diasporic experience.

  • Ramlila in South East and East Asia.

Selected papers from the Conference proceedings will be published.

Paper presenters would be provided local lodging / boarding and hospitality by IGNCA. 

N.B. Apart from the seven day International Conference, there shall be a month long exhibition, a ten day festival of cultural performances from India and abroad, a fifteen day long crafts workshops, a week-long film screenings and four literary evenings.

Exhibition on Ramlila - Masks, puppets, paintings and photographs relating to the performances of Ramlila from all over the country are on display at the exhibition. The exhibits, mainly from the archives of IGNCA,give a glimpse into the world of theatre relating to Ramlila. Almost all the regions of the country are represented in the exhibition.
