Images of India - a Fascinating Journey through Time

The Curated Exhibition Images of India-a fascinating journey through time showcases the illustrated sketches, drawings, lithographs, etchings, wood-cut etc. of 18th 19th century rare books from the IGNCA archives which throw ample light on the art, architecture and various aspects of Indian culture and the contents provide information about the past which has got faded and distorted due to various reasons. The first-hand accounts of foreigners visiting India are undoubtedly valuable for the inquisitive scholars in the field of art and culture. The travel literature spans all fields of interest. While in the earlier travel accounts of the Europeans there is precedent of commercial and colonial interest which later on shifts to publication of recreational travel literature of the late 18th and 19th centuries. The contributors of the 18th 19th century European publications were members of British army and navy; surveyors, engineers, medical staff, travelers etc. Driven by the curiosity and being fascinated by what they saw in India – the lands and the diverse inhabitants, customs, as also beliefs prevalent amongst the people, the European travelers made their way to the most interior and the remotest parts to have an understanding of the regions. Much of what they wrote was intended for amusement to their readers, as well as for information and instruction. The exhibition give glimpses of old landscapes of the important cities; architecture of temples, mosques, tombs and living quarters; social life during the period and details of musical instruments, costumes, transportation and other objects of interest. The exhibition intends to make the scholars aware about the great variety of books on Indian art, architecture, culture, religion of the 19th and 20th century. The rich intellectual content and the matching illustrations of the books reveal to the readers of the state of the society when the country was passing through a transition phase, as a result of cross cultural currents, experiencing new influences from the west, adapting to new conditions and at the same time retaining the age old values, tradition and customs.

Exhibition on Kantha Embroidery

The Kantha is a special and beautiful art form developed mainly by the women of Bengal with great passion and love. The Kanthas are infact quilts prepared by layers of old cotton sarees joined together by darn stitches. The threads are drawn across the layers so close to one another that the entire field appears to be rippled. Once the field is prepared the coloured threads are taken out from the borders of the sarees for embroidering the field. The designs of embroidery are symbolic in character and have a close affinity to the alpana. The central design is usually a lotus with variable number of petals interspersed with diverse patterns. The most recurrent designs are tree of life, animals, birds, fish, mythological figures, boats, chariots kalkas etc. which are conventional and freely balanced.

Exhibition of textiles from the four states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya and Nagaland.

Threads of Change: Textile Cultures of North East India

The IGNCA has commissioned the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad to study and document the textile traditions of the North Eastern states under the project titled, Documenting the Textile Traditions of the North Eastern States of India: A Composite Design Study of Fibres, Fabrics, Looms & Tools, Uses and Cultural Indicators. Spread over a period of four years, it is a comprehensive study of textile traditions in the North East. During the course of the project, teams comprising textile designers, historians, sociologists, photographers and videographers spent two months on field and conducted a holistic study of their traditional textiles; which included documenting fibres, fabrics, looms, tools, weaving techniques and dyeing methods, and also narratives, myth, migration stories, and unique socio-cultural practices of the indigenous communities. Documentation of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, and Nagaland was conducted in the first phase of the project while the states of Mizoram, Tripura, Manipur, and Sikkim are being documented in the second phase will be on display. This is part of the on-going collaborative project between IGNCA and NID.

In the Craft demonstrations area, weavers from all the four states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, and Nagaland will demonstrate their skills with the use of loin loom and other handlooms.

Exhibition of some rare photographs of Dr. Rashid Jahan.

The book ‘A Rebel and Her Cause: The Life and Work of Rashid Jahan’ has emerged out of the research by Rakhshanda Jalil, carried out under the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts programme on Confluence of Traditions and Composite Cultures. Dr. Rashid Jahan (1905- 1953) was a multifaceted personality: a doctor, a dedicated member of the Communist Party and one of the founding members of the Progressive Writers Movement. The aim of the project was to revisit Dr. Jahan’s legacy and its contribution to the making of India’s composite cultures. In a remarkably perceptive and richly detailed account of this pioneering woman, Rakhshanda Jalil offers the readers an unusual document: a warm and informed biography based on archival material, extensive interviews and critical commentaries together with fine translations of Rashid Jahan’s best known stories and plays.
