Ustad Yunus Husain Khan (Darpan)
Yunus Hussain Khan was one of the foremost vocalist in the country.
He was the “KHALIFA” (successor) of the celebrated
AGRA GHARANA, which has an unbroken family history going back over
five hundred years. Trained
in the rigorous manners of his heritage by his illustrious father, the
Late Ustad Vilayat Husain Khan. Who’s
contribution to the advancement of music in the present century is
contribution of “Agra Gharana” (derived from the old Nohar bani) to the
continuity of classical vocal music of North India is undisputed. From the
early medieval period to the present day, this musical tradition has
carried a treasure of musical forms, Ragas, Compositions and a unique
gayaki of its own. Within
these five centuries, Witnessing the glories of Lodhi, Suri dynasty, Tomar
and Mughal Rajya, Rajput States and colonial rule, this tradition has
reached Free India. Originating
from Haji Sujan Khan Nohar (1974-1599), a contemporary of Ibrahim Lodhi,
Alakh Dad, Miyan Tansen the court Singer of Akbar, this tradition has
produced a number of distinguished musicians.
Yunus Hussain Khan has been prominent in the Hindustani Musical scene for
more than five decades and has carried himself eminently as a worthy
representative off the glowing musical heritage of INDIA, at the national
as well as at the international level.
Possessed with a rich voice and superb musicianship, he sings AGRA GHARANA
GAYAKI in his own individuality.
has left a valued collection of his compositions under
the nom-de-plum “DARPAN” and several ragas, viz Sujani malhar, Devyani, Nat Deepak, Husaini Bhairav, Nohar Todi, Ahiri
Bihag, Lalita Sohini, Jogwanti etc.
Yunus Husain Khan was also, a scholar and teacher of music. He has been a
lecturer, Reader, and Professor of music at University of Delhi, Visva
Bharti University of Santiniketan and Sangeet Research
Academy at Calcutta. During
1985-86, he taught at the University of Washington in the Ethnomusicology
Programme and also gave lectures and demonstrations in the University of
British Culombia, Canada. Ustad Yunus Husain Khan has settled in Delhi.
USTAD YUNUS HUSSAIN KHAN SAHEB
Ustad Yunus Hussain Khan Saheb composed 9 Ragas, which are unique
like Sujani Malhaar, Lalita Sohini, Devyani, Nat Deepak, Nav Bihag
Jogwanti, Husaini Bhairav and Nohar Todi.
Khan Saheb composed more than Hundred compositions.
He visited several countries such as America, France, Holland,
England, Germany, Canada, Austria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Italy, Japan to
spread Indian Classical Music.
Ustad Yunus Hussain Khan Saheb was associated with Delhi
University, Vishva Bharti Shanti Niketan University, Seattle (America)
University apart from this he was also associated with ALL INDIA RADIO and
SANGEET NATAK ACADEMY.
